Summary: Love can be a very confusing thing
Author's notes: A short piece about Irene. Experimenting with styles a bit ;).
When she had been a little girl, Irene Rosenthal hadn’t liked boys very much. But then again, most six-year-old girls don’t like boys much.
Then came puberty, and she had started liking them, which, at first, had been very confusing. Luckily, her friends had felt the same, which made her realize that this was probably normal.
Falling in love with Katharina, kissing her behind the garden shed on a hot summer night, on the other hand… that probably wasn’t. So they had vowed to keep this a secret, something only between themselves. And even though Irene sometimes felt doubtful and confused – after all, she still liked boys – she knew that not acting on her heart’s desire would only make things worse.
But secrets have a bad habit of being revealed. Her mother had cried, her father had shouted a lot, and she had moved in with her older brother, who said that it didn’t matter, and after all, she was his little sister. Shortly after this, Katharina broke up with her, and like so many teenagers in her situation, she’d vowed to never fall in love again.
Irene spent most of her time studying, and her good marks brought her a scholarship for the university, where she enrolled in chemistry and mathematics. One of her fellow students, who had probably hoped for more than he’d let on at first, had taken her to the aeronautics club, since she’d once mentioned that she’d fallen in love with flying the day her uncle had taken her for a ride in his machine.
There, she’d met Dee, and for a while, things had gotten really confusing, before finally falling into place.
